Two Days in Copenhagen Itinerary- A two day, 48 hour schedule for Copenhagen, Denmark. The best sights to see, where to eat, drink and go in Copenhagen. This itinerary will highlight some of the famous sights to see in Copenhagen, and some well and some not so well known local eats and drinks that the city has to offer.
Where To Stay
We stayed in an AirBnB in the Frederiksberg area of Copenhegan. I loved this choice as there were lots of local establishments in this area, not just tourist trap restaurants and bars. But it was also very close to use public transit or even walk to the famous sights in the city. If using AirBnB (use this link for up to $55 for your first stay).
Overview
This schedule is centered mostly around finding some of the best foods and drinks in the area. Hitting up some unknown local joints and breweries, with some of the major sights in Copenhagen.
- Places to Eat
- Breweries
- Bakeries
- Famous Sights in the city
- Amusement Park
Day 1
St. Peders Bakery
St. Pete’s or known as Skt. Peders Bageri was once again another recommendation to us. This is the perfect breakfast and coffee on the go. Let us get a quick start to a busy day. I didn’t have high expectations for this location as we have had many pastries from around the world but this bakery definitely hit the spot. Coming from a family of a former bakery owner I love my pastries, and this was good! Very fresh, sweet and perfectly baked. They also offer delicious coffee options. If in this area definitely check it out for a sweet treat.
Freetown Christiania
Christiania is a former military base that sat abandoned for many years. In 1971 a group of people broke down the barricades and began squatting there. Now about 900 people live in the neighborhood. Since then it’s evolved into an autonomous zone, members who have all agreed to live by a certain set of principles which include fairness, equality, no taxes and having their own laws completely independent of the Danish government. Read all about Freetown Christiania here.
Nyhavn
Originally, Nyhavn was a busy commercial port where ships from all over the world would dock. The area was packed with sailors, ladies of pleasure, pubs and alehouses. Today the beautiful old houses have been renovated and restaurants dominate the old port. This is an iconic spot in Copenhagen to see, take canal rides and eat. We passed through but found other food options just a few blocks away.
Gasoline Grill
For lunch check out Gasoline Grill. This was another recommendation to us from frequent visitors. It is easy to walk by this place and not realize what it is, as it is a self service gas station as well. Placed in the middle of the street the location has two gas pumps, a small order window and just a few benches outside for those who want to sit down.
We were near the original location but they now have 4 locations within the city of Copenhagen. Their menu is simple, burgers and fries. Prepare for there to be lines as this is a local favorite, but they sling the burgers out fast. This juicy burger is definitely a must along with this unique experience in CPH.
The Little Mermaid
Another iconic spot in Copenhagen is The Little Mermaid statue. The Little Mermaid is a bronze statue by Edvard Eriksen, depicting a mermaid becoming human. Definitely a hot tourist spot. We went as it wasn’t too far off our route, and took us through some cool parks. But honestly being a foodie I could have skipped this and spent some more time sampling the food and drinks around the city. Or you can plan on making this a pretty short stop at least.
***I didn’t know this was here but closed to this iconic spot is another fun take on this famous sculpture, The Genetically Modified Little Mermaid.
Grundtvigs Church
If you have time to make it out of the city a little I would recommend visiting this Gothic style Danish Church. Grundtvigs Church light colored walls and high ceilings makes a stunning view.
Baest
Baest is located in the Norrebro area of Copenhagen, and is a must go while in the city. They specialize in wood fire cooked pizzas and their organic home grown ingredients. The chef has his own farm just about 40 km from the restaurant called Farm of Ideas. Here they raise cows in which they use the milk to make mozzarella for the pizzas and grow tons of fresh ingredients for their restaurants. Their charcuterie is cured and cut right above the dining area as well. Here is where we had one of my favorite pizzas of my life. And don’t pass on dessert here, get the tiramisu!
They also make handmade cocktails, and tons of small plate meals to sample. We ordered two pizzas to share between the three of us and of course got tiramisu for dessert.
Mikkeller and Friends
End your day at Mikkeller and Friends has locations around the world as well, this was our first chance to visit one. After many recommendations of this place we had to give it a try. Walking in we planned to stay for a drink but ended our time here hours later and many samples later. It also helped that the World Cup match was on to watch as we sipped. With 40 beers on tap it was hard not to find many you wanted to try here. I will now forever be on the watch for Mikkeller locations in cities where we travel. Mikkeller has a few other locations and bottle shops around Copenhagen as well.
Day 2
Torvehallerne Market
Torvehallerne Market, or also known as the Glass Market, is the perfect lunch spot. With plenty of vendors to choose from you can find an option for anyone. From ice cream, to tacos, sushi, and plenty of Copenhagen’s famous rye bread Smørrebrød sandwich options as well. While there are many vendors to choose from you can start your day with pastries and coffee at Coffee Kollective.
Tivoli Gardens
Today you can spend most of your day at the Tivoli Gardens. Tivoli Gardens is a huge amusement park in the middle of the city. Yes there are rides, but you don’t have to buy a ride pass if that’s not your thing. You can buy just a general admission ticket to explore the gardens and eat at the restaurants. The restaurants there are not your typical greasy amusement park food, there are tons of nice dining areas in the park as well. Many adults visit this park, but children will absolutely love it!
Meat Packing District
The next part of your itinerary will be visiting the Meat Packing District in Copenhagen. Named being that is used to be an actual meat pacing area by the water. But now as turned into an entertainment district. This area is packed full of delicious restaurants and bars. I heard late in the evenings it gets pretty packed full of bar hoppers. But we went during the early evening and it was fairly quiet.
Hija de Sanchez
Looking for the best tacos in Copenhagen? Look no farther than Hija de Sanchez. They also have a location in the Torvehallerne Market that I mentioned above that is opened seasonally. But we went to check out their original location in Copenhagen’s Meat Packing District. The menu rotates depending on availability. We ordered all three that were available! They were definitely worth our long walk after getting lost a few times.
War Pigs Brew Pub
Right next to Sanchez is War Pigs Brew Pub, we had to check this brewery out as there are locations around the world. War Pigs is a brewery created in collaboration of Mikkeller and 3 Floyds breweries. After loving Mikkeller and Friends were had to make a visit. They have plenty of seating inside and outside. If feeling hungry they have a walk up window to order some delicious BBQ plates. Our friend ordered some house made pickles, after devouring those we went for the fried pickles. The fried pickles were so good I almost order another plate, but opted for another pint instead! Beers rotate but have plenty to choose from, get a flight or get a few pints, it will be well worth it.
Mikkeller
If you want some more brews or didn’t get to check out Mikeller and Friends the night before they have another Mikkeller location near this market area. I am a big fan of their beers.
Some Other Great Food Options:
Noma- if feeling like a splurge
Manfreds- for tartar
Cafe Paludan
