Berlin On Bike
This post has been sponsored by Visit Berlin. All opinions are my own.
Berlin has so much to see and so much history to immerse yourself in, there no better way to see Berlin than by bike! Knowing we were only going to have 3 days in Berlin we wanted to see as much as we could. Typically I am more of a do-it-yourself type of traveler and tend to stay away from guided tours, until we found Berlin on Bike. We were so glad we did this tour. We knew a general history of the city and country but this tour gave us so much more of an insight to what makes Berlin Berlin and the sadden history this city has been through.
Berlin on Bike has four different tours to choose from:
Berlin’s Best: taking you through the city touching on architecture, the Berlin Wall, museums, Brandenburg Gate, city parks, and the city center to get a cohesive feel for all that is Berlin.
Berlin Wall Tour: dive deep in the history of such a visible sign of struggle in this city and country. Get a take of the endless stories of the Berlin Wall from building to the removal.
Alternative Berlin: this tour celebrates Berlin, from the street art, architecture, people, nightlife and stores throughout the city.
Street Art Tour: All about the art that lives outside of the museums and galleries in Berlin.
We choose Berlin’s Best as if touched on some of all of the above.
Checking In
First you meet at KulturBrauerei, which once was a historic brewery and factory area now turned into an arts and entertainment center. We got there by public transportation using our Berlin Welcome Pass. Go a little early to not only pick out a bike and practice riding around but also to explore the area. I was so impressed with where their shop was located, the brick architecture of the once factory buildings are incredible.
Berlin on Bike has quiet the fleet of bikes to choose from. Their staff will help you find one you feel the most comfortable on and fit you for a helmet if you want.
When checking in they told us our specific meeting location within the plaza, as they had different types of tours in many different types of languages going on throughout the day. Berlin on Bike makes sure to keep their group sizes small, we had about 8 people on our tour.
Once ready to head out on the tour your guide will give you directions on how to maneuver the streets of Berlin on bike, and as well as proper signals and etiquette while at stops and riding along the bike lanes. After a quick introduction you will be ready to head out on your chosen tour. They even assign a ‘caboose’ that will make sure everyone stays together, without missing a turn.
The Tour
We absolutely loved our tour guide, she was full of energy, and her love and passion for the city of Berlin captured and intrigued us as we listened to her stories, knowledge about the history and current events in the city. Lauren guided us through the streets making sure to stop at all her favorite street art, buildings and sights. The guides even had books and print out of images of what streets and areas looked like before war and the wall, which added another layer to the tour. I have a tendency to zone out on tours but this one was one I did not. She had so many historic stories of the city, the Berlin Wall, monuments, museums, street art and turmoil I couldn’t wait to hear the next. Definitely kept me on my toes.
Since the tour was 3.5 hrs and in the middle of the day they let us stop for lunch and a restroom break. I believe this may switch up depending on tour and tour guide but we stopped for currywurst, which is a must have in Berlin, at Dom Curry. This stand had more than just traditional curry, such as ostrich and vegetarian sausages as well. It was all delicious and a perfect snack during our tour. Check here for more on Where to Eat and Drink in Berlin Germany.
After many more sights and stories that I could had never captured within 3.5 hours on our own we came to an end. This tour is worth it for the knowledge and stories alone, it’s hard to truly understand Berlin and its culture on it’s own unless you know the stories and history of the city. These quick but personal tours give great insight into the city, I couldn’t have loved our guide and tour more!
