I will admit when I first started traveling to different countries public transportation was one of my biggest worries. We are not known in Cincinnati for our public transit options. And I never really traveled many places that had it. I was a little concerned how I would get to point A and point B.
I often find myself in conversation with others that also find public transit in unknown cities intimidating. Throughout my travels have found out we really shouldn’t feel like this! It is often so easy, and with tools like the Berlin Welcome Card it makes it that much more easier.
What Can You Use the Welcome Card For?
We used our Welcome Card for all of our public transportation during our time in Berlin, it also has other great perks such as discounts for museums, tours and more.
The Welcome Card also has many different options to choose from to let you chose for your type of travel, needs and budget.
Being able to use any type of transportation knowing it was already paid for made exploring Berlin a breeze. The card includes unrestricted access on various modes of public transportation such as ferries, buses, trams in addition to the U-Bahn and S-Bahn. We would use our downloaded Maps.me app to find the closest mode of transport and time tables to get from sight seeing, dinner (our favorite meals here: Where to Eat and Drink in Berlin Germany) or back to our hotel.
Which one to purchase?
First when purchasing your Welcome Card you can choose what zones you will need during your time there. If using the Schönefeld Airport (SXF) you will want to get Berlin + Potsdam ABC Pass as this will insure that all of your public transportation will be covered. Here is a map that shows what parts of the city are covered within the different zones.
Next, decide how many days you will need to use your Welcome Card. They have options from anywhere from 48 hours to 6 days.
Finally decide how you want your card delivered to you. You can print it at home or have it shipped!
Don’t forget children travel free with an adult with a Welcome Card!
Once you have received your Welcome Card you will also get a map of Berlin with already marked sights and stops for you to visit during you time in the city.
How To Use It
This first time you use the Welcome Card you do need to validate it. This will activate your card and you can begin to use in throughout the city. You only need to do this once! When getting on the bus they will have small yellow boxes to do this on the bus itself. At the train stations you will find these boxes on the platforms. If you are not sure where to find, it just ask! You will usually see other card holders doing it as well!
Once activated make sure you carry your card on you at all times, we put ours in our wallet just to make sure. If an inspector comes to check validated cards you will need to have this on you or you will be fined!
If using the card for discounts on admission to museums and tours make sure you show your Welcome Card upon purchase of tickets.
